About the Learn to Scull Program
A comprehensive introduction to the art and sport of sculling from Ann Arbor Rowing Club.
Program History
Our Learn to Scull program has been introducing new scullers to the Huron River for over 15 years. Developed by experienced coaches and consistently refined through participant feedback, the program has evolved to use a weekend intensive format that maximizes learning and skill retention while accommodating busy schedules.
Program Philosophy
The AARC Learn to Scull program is designed around five core principles:
- Safety first: comprehensive water safety training, including self-rescue techniques.
- Progressive learning: skills build from fundamentals to confident independent rowing.
- Supportive instruction: small class sizes with experienced coaches and a 1:3 coach-to-student ratio.
- Inclusive approach: accessible to adults with a wide range of backgrounds, fitness levels, and learning styles.
- Pathway to membership: clear next steps for continuing development after the course.
Equipment and Facilities
The program uses beginner-friendly singles, indoor ergs for technical instruction, safety launches, and the AARC boathouse on the Huron River. Indoor classroom space supports land-based instruction and pre-launch briefings.
Beyond the Program
After completing Learn to Scull, graduates can:
- join the Open Sculling Program trial,
- become full AARC members with access to club boats and facilities,
- attend technique sessions and clinics for continued improvement, and
- engage with the broader AARC community through volunteer opportunities and events.
